Character Names For Star Wars The Force Awakens revealed.
After speculation about those characters in the widely-seen teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams,
Disney and Lucasfilm dropped the names in the most perfect way possible – via trading faux Topps bubble-gum cards.
John Boyega’s Stormtrooper (above), rumored to be the movie’s lead character, is Finn. The Topps-style card confirms that he’s “on the run.”
That now-famous soccer ball droid with the Artoo-like head is BB-8.
Daisy Ridley’s desert planet speeder driver — the movie’s female lead, so far as we know — is Rey.
The mysterious Sith-like figure igniting his lightsaber in a forest isn’t a Sith at all — at least, not one with a traditional “Darth” title. He’s called Kylo Ren.
And Oscar Isaac’s pilot in the X-Wing? Meet Poe Dameron. (With apologies to all fans who hoped he was a child of the pilot who appears in the entire original trilogy, Wedge Antilles.)
There’s more to the reveal, as you might expect from Abrams: Mr. Mystery Box himself.
Each character has a number of card attached, and they’re broken into two colors — red and blue — with more sets of colors on the way.
- #11 — BB-8 on the move
- #53 — Poe Dameron in his X-Wing
- #67 — Kylo Ren ignites his Lightsaber
- #74 — Rey on her Speeder
- #76 — Finn on the run
- #81 — Stormtroopers prepare for battle
- #88 — X-Wings in formation
- #96 — The Millennium Falcon
For now, let’s content ourselves with a delightful throwback to the Topps cards from 1977 (and here’s a nice piece of geek trivia to amaze your friends with — those first rounds of cards were designed by then-underground comics artist Art Spiegelman).
Take this as one more signal to the older fans that Abrams is very interested in recreating the style of Star Wars movie you remember from your youth.
Said Abrams: “I’m only sorry we couldn’t give everyone a stick of gum.”
